INDIA PLATFORM: BRIDGING EUROPE AND INDIA

Date : ಗುರುವಾರ, ನವೆಂಬರ 1st, 2012

PRESS NOTE

INDIA PLATFORM: BRIDGING EUROPE AND INDIA

Ghent University Rector in Bangalore to sign Stakeholder Agreements between India Platform and several Indian universities at signing ceremony hosted by Governor of Karnataka.

2 November, 12:30, M.S. Ramaiah Administrative Block

Bangalore, India

Currently, a Ghent University delegation is visiting India and Karnataka, including the Rector, Prof. Paul Van Cauwenberge, the Commissioner of the Government, Mr. Yannick De Clercq, and the Chief Academic Officer, Dr. Koen Goethals. In the framework of this visit, a group of new stakeholders will become part of the India Platform on 3 November 2012, when the Governor of Karnataka is hosting a grand signing ceremony at the Raj Bhavan. On that day, the University of Agricultural Sciences Bangalore, the National Law School of India, Amrita University and Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries University will join the India Platform in its mission. An India Platform Office has also been set up on the premises of the M.S. Ramaiah campus in Bangalore.

Why the India Platform? Globalization is changing the world we live in at every level. Both Europe and India are facing new challenges today: the need for developing higher education and scientific research in India; the graying of the population in Europe; creating cost-effective health care and social security systems in both regions; handling the increasing economic competition… Every day it becomes clearer that neither India nor Europe will be able to cope with these challenges separately. But fortunately there is a beautiful side to globalization also: it shall allow the people of these two great cultures to help solve each other’s problems through intensive cooperation. Both India and Europe will benefit once they meet as equal partners in collaboration, rather than as competitors.

In this context, Ghent University, Belgium and its Rector, Prof. Paul Van Cauwenberge, identified India as a priority region for academic collaboration and established the India Platform in 2008. Professor Balagangadhara (Balu) – who hails from Bangalore (India) but has been living in Ghent (Belgium) for more than 35 years – was invited to become its founding director. He took this as a unique opportunity to develop a new vision for collaboration between India and Europe, thus giving something back to the two cultures that shaped and nourished him as a human being.

Instead of institution-to-institution relations, the India Platform is building a people-to-people relationship between the people of Karnataka and the people of several European regions. It has the objective of developing this new form of collaboration and exchange of knowledge between India and Europe in several domains:

  • social sciences and humanities
  • medical sciences and health care
  • agriculture and the environment
  • urban planning and engineering
  • business and management

The India Platform is active in Europe and in India:

On one hand, it has created a consortium of European universities and organizations. The University of Pardubice (Czech Republic), the University of Groningen (the Netherlands), and the University of Aveiro (Portugal) all agreed to become stakeholders in the India Platform. Soon thereafter they were joined by NP-Bridging, an engineering company specialized in urban planning and bridge-building. Negotiations with other universities and organizations across the region of Flanders (Belgium) and in Northern and Eastern Europe are well under way.

On the other hand, the India Platform is building a consortium of universities and colleges in South India, with the State of Karnataka as the core region of its activities. Here, Gokula Education Foundation with its renowned M.S. Ramaiah group of institutions and Karnataka State Law University became the first stakeholders. On November 3rd they will be joined by the above-noted institutions.

The story of the India Platform will not end on that day however. It is seeking more partners, not only in the higher education sector but also among business companies, municipal councils, hospitals, primary and secondary schools, non-governmental organizations… Thus, different forms of cooperation will be possible: joint scientific research and educational programmes; city-twinning between cities in Karnataka and Europe; cooperation of schools in these two parts of the world; setting up joint health care systems; and applying for a variety of collaborative projects. Thus, the India Platform shall truly build long-lasting bridges between Europe and India.
