Prof K.R Venugopal elevated as IEEE fellow, first in Bengaluru University and first in Karnataka

Bengaluru, January 5 (Karnataka Information): The Principal of the University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering, Professor K R Venugopal has been elevated as IEEE ( Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers ) Fellow.

He is being recognized for exemplary contribution and leadership to computer science and electrical engineering education over the last three and a half decades.

Prof Venugopal is widely acclaimed for his pioneering textbooks,organizing International Conferences, delivering Keynote addresses, planning and monitoring technical councils in India.

Prof. Venugopal is a World-renowned teacher, prolific researcher and able administrator with a record of eleven multi-interdisciplinary degrees in Electronics, Computer Science, Communications, Economics, Business Finance, Law, Industrial Relations, Public Relations and Journalism including a PhD in Computer Science from IIT Madras under the guidance of Prof P Sreenivasa Kumar and a PhD in Economics under the renowned Economist Prof K. Venkatagiri Gowda.

He is a Post Doctoral Research Scholar and visiting Professor at University of Southern California, USA. He has served UVCE and Bangalore University for the last four decades. He has made exemplary contributions to books, research publications and Engineering-Education Worldwide. He has authored, co-authored and edited 57 textbooks. He has supervised 630 graduate dissertations. Venugopal, a prolific researcher has authored and co-authored 500 plus publications

He has successfully guided 21 PhD students, at present he is guiding nine students and is an informal guide to 60 plus research scholars. He has filed 102 patents, organized 24 international conferences,100 plus workshops and seminars across the country. He has delivered200 plus keynote addresses.

Dr Venugopal received the Award of Excellence 2011 for contributions to Higher Education and Research from Indian Engineering Congress 2011 Anna University National Award in recognition of Outstanding contribution to the Academic community and students, the Karnataka State Government for Book writing; Uttar Pradesh State Government National Award for outstanding work done in the field of education; Kempe Gowda Award for his contribution to Science and Technology; Sir M Visvesvaraya Award from Visvesvaraya Technological University for Academic Excellence in 2011. He has received the IEEE student branch counselor Award in 2005 from New York and Rotary International Vocational Excellence Award in 2012.

The IEEE Grade of Fellow is conferred by the IEEE Board of Directors upon a person with an outstanding record of accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest. The total number selected in any one year cannot exceed one-tenth of one-percent of the total voting membership. IEEE Fellow is the highest grade of membership and is recognized by the technical community as a prestigious honor and an important career achievement.

The IEEE is the world’s leading professional association for advancing technology for humanity, through its 400,000 members in 160 countries, the IEEE is a leading authority on a wide variety of areas ranging from aerospace systems, computers and telecommunications to biomedical engineering, electric power and consumer electronics.

Dedicated to the advancement of technology, the IEEE publishes 30 percent of the world’s literature in the electrical and electronics engineering and computer science fields, and has developed more than 900 active industry standards. The association also sponsors or co-sponsors nearly 400 international technical conferences each year. This year three Professors have been elevated to IEEE fellow from India. The other two are Prof Sanghamitra Bandyopadhyay, Director, ISI and Prof Souvik Mahapatra, IIT, Bombay.

As an able administrator, Dr Venugopal manages a century-old engineering college, UVCE. Venugopal joined UVCE as a student of Electronics Engineering in 1974 and has successfully completed four decades of service. Prof Venugopal is an exemplary model of a renowned world-class teacher who inspires, creates and transforms the students’ dreams into reality for a better world. His teaching, research and administrative contributions are par excellence, extraordinary, outstanding and he richly deserves the IEEE Fellow’s status. Dr Venugopal is the first person in Bangalore University and Karnataka to be honoured the prestigious IEEE Fellow status.
